  • Good reading -- My "good reading" page contains links to a number of interesting individual works, papers, and even online books.
  • Textfiles.com -- Do you remember the BBS era? Calling up the hottest boards and spending all night reading/posting messages, browsing T-philes, and exchanging useless warez as if it was currency? Well Jason Scott has commemorated those times with his enormous archive of old text files (mostly from the 80's). If you still don't understand the purpose, perhaps you should read his statement.
  • The NSA rainbow series A number of useful documents, including the famous Orange book , otherwise kown as "Department Of Defense Trusted Computer System Evaluation Criteria". They have a lot of other great documents here.
  • The Linux Documentation Project . A tremendous resource full of useful information on hundreds of Linux-related topics. This site contains many user contributed books, howtos, mini-howtos, FAQs, etc. Every Linux user should have this site (in particular the Howto Index as one of their Netscape bookmarks.
  • Phrack --If you haven't read the latest Phrack, you are really missing out. It is the best, and by far the longest running hacker zine out there. Also check out my OS fingerprinting article from Phrack 54 or my port scanning article from Phrack 52.
  • Securityfocus.com -- An excellent (commercial) site run by Aleph1 and others. They host Bugtraq (the Internet's most important security list), a vast collection of security tools, and an up-to-date vulnerability database. They also provide timely news.
  • UNIX Socket Programming FAQ --This covers a lot of the common problems that cause days of anguish to network programmers. Argh! If only I had found this BEFORE I stumbled through many of the difficulties covered! Also has other nifty socket programming resources.
  • Etext archives --A huge archive of electronic books, zines, etc.

About 2 months ago Microsoft released a couple of hotfixes that improved the stability and reliability of Windows Vista, these were not made available on Automatic Updates.

That aside, Microsoft has released an update to the compatibility, reliability, and stability of Windows Vista fix that further improves the reliability of your system.

The original fix improved annoyances such as file copy calculation & speed from within windows to other (local or network) drives.

This update improves the compatibility, reliability, and stability of Windows Vista. This update includes the following improvements ->

* It extends the battery life for mobile devices.
* It improves the stability of portable computers and of desktop computers that use an uninterruptable power supply (UPS).
* It improves the reliability of Windows Vista when you open the menu of a startup application.
* It improves the stability of wireless network services.
* It shortens the startup time of Windows Vista by using a better timing structure.
* It shortens the recovery time after Windows Vista experiences a period of inactivity.
* It shortens the recovery time when you try to exit the Photos screen saver.
* It improves the stability of Windows PowerShell.

This update also resolves the following issues in Windows Vista:
* A compatibility issue that affects some third-party antivirus software applications.
* A reliability issue that occurs when a Windows Vista-based computer uses certain netw

That's right! There is a hack available that will permit you to access, download and install the official release of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 straight from Microsoft.

Download a zip here which contains the necessary registry keys to allow the computer to download Windows Vista SP1 through Windows Update. Take a look at it first, maybe backup your Registry.

Execute that bat file as an administrator by right-clicking it and selecting Run As Administrator. Start Wndows Update afterwards and go through the process three times in total downloading (KB935509) - v1.005, (KB937287) -Build 6001.17036 (x86) and (KB938371) v1.018 in each consecutive try.

The computer has to be rebooted after every try which means that you start Windows Updates three times and reboot the computer as many times as well. Once this is done you start Windows Update once again and Windows Vista SP1 Beta - 6001.17036 (x86) should appear on that list.
